The Fourth of July is a time for cookouts, fireworks, swimming, and spending time with family and friends. While the holiday brings plenty of fun, it can also increase the risk of fires, injuries, property damage, and accidents.

A little preparation can go a long way toward keeping your family, guests, pets, and property safe during the celebration.

Practice Fireworks Safety

Fireworks should always be used outdoors in an open area away from homes, vehicles, trees, dry grass, and anything else that could catch fire.

Keep children and pets at a safe distance and never allow young children to handle fireworks. Even sparklers can become extremely hot and cause serious burns.

Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight one that does not go off. Keep a bucket of water, garden hose, or fire extinguisher nearby, and soak used fireworks before disposing of them.
